About the Authors
Allan Platt, PA-C, MMSc: From 1984 until 2004 he was the program coordinator and a physician assistant at the Georgia Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center at Grady Health System, the world’s first dedicated 24-hour emergency center for sickle cell patients. The center remains one of the largest in the world, currently providing primary and emergency care for 1,700 sickle cell patients. Platt is the architect of the Sickle Cell Information Center at www.SCInfo.org, which won American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) Innovations in Health Care honors in 2000. In 2002, Platt received the Paragon Teacher of the Year Award from the AAPA, and the Student Academy of AAPA President’s Award in 2007. He is co-author of Overcoming Pain (Hilton Publishing) and author of Evidence-Based Medicine for PDAs: A Guide for Practice (Bartlett and Jones). Today Platt is assistant professor of medicine and director of admissions at the Emory University School of Medicine Physician Assistant Program.
James Eckman, MD: Dr. Eckman today is Professor Emeritus of Hematology and Medical Oncology at the Winship Cancer Institute at Emory University School of Medicine. During his long and distinguished career, he was committed to establishing a sickle cell program and, after intensive state lobbying for funding in the 1980s he became Medical Director of the world’s first 24-hour comprehensive acute care sickle cell center at Grady Memorial Hospital. Eckman is an international leader in the care of sickle cell patients and has championed newborn screening for sickle cell disease nationally. This screening has saved the lives of many children with sickle cell disease and it was through his efforts that Georgia instituted universal mandatory sickle cell screening for newborns in 1998. Listed as one of America’s “Top Doctors” by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., Eckman’s dedication to public health delivery of medical services, research, and the study of blood disorders has garnered him widespread recognition and honors. He was recipient of the 2000 and 2002 National Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems Safety Net Clinician Award, was a 1998 and 2003 finalist for the Atlanta Business Chronicle Healthcare Hero, and was honored in 2006 with a special senate resolution from the Georgia General Assembly for his work in sickle cell disease.
Lewis L. Hsu, MD, PhD: Dr. Hsu is a pediatric hematologist dedicated to finding more cures for sickle cell disease and improving treatment and education until more cures can be found. Through his 21 years of experience in leadership of some of the largest sickle cell programs in the country, his immersion in “team science” includes a strong commitment to research because of his bedside appreciation of clinical needs of patients with sickle cell disease. He has published over 70 peer-reviewed papers, mentored numerous physicians and graduate students, and contributed to four sickle cell websites devoted to patient education. At Emory University, Hsu helped build the Atlanta pediatric sickle cell clinical consortium, a lead participant in two landmark multicenter clinical trials: bone marrow transplantation to cure sickle cell disease and transcranial Doppler ultrasound screening to prevent stroke in pediatric sickle cell disease (“the STOP study”). Hsu joined Children’s National Medical Center as director of one of the largest pediatric sickle cell programs in the U.S., where he has been building a regional collaborative approach to clinical care, research, advocacy, and education. He has co-authored guidelines for pediatric sickle cell care and pulmonary hypertension, contributed to five sickle cell websites devoted to patient education, and consulted on “VoiceCrisisAlert,” a smartphone app that helps patients with pain management. Now at the University of Illinois at Chicago, his more recent initiatives focus on improving patient outcomes and healthcare costs through healthcare delivery improvement, specifically addressing the adolescent-to-adult transition in sickle cell. Working closely with adult hematology, emergency medicine and population health, he is building a comprehensive program for pediatric-to-adult comprehensive sickle cell care across the lifespan.
